In the coming years we will look back to 2020 as a time that changed everything. In no other field has there been an unprecedented increase such as that in the digital sector and online commerce, which exploded during the COVID-19 crisis. As quarantine and isolation have become the new norm, companies and consumers have increasingly turned to the digital environment, providing and purchasing more goods and services online, increasing the contribution of online commerce to world trade from 14%, in 2019, to approximately 17%, in 2020. These data, as well as other findings, can be found in a new UNCTAD report, COVID-19 and online commerce: a global perspective, which analyzes the strong global and regional transformations undergone by this sector during 2020.
