In order to achieve a sound economic recovery, central governments need to consider the services sector as a key element of their policy mix. Services play an important role in increasing productivity, efficiency and effectiveness throughout the economy. Globally, the services sector accounts for two-thirds of economic output, more than half of employment and about a quarter of direct exports. As the pandemic has grown, the need to strengthen the services sector has never been greater, given its role in improving productivity and export capacity, diversifying and updating production and trade.
